New! Kindermusik Family Time 5:45 pm
Music class for families with multiple children ages newborn and up
In ten weeks, you'll play instruments together, dance together, share, and take turns, and see how music can bring you closer as a family.
A one-room schoolhouse approach to music. With older children ready to show the little ones how it's done and the younger ones eager to learn, Family Time becomes a multi-layered learning environment. Each week, a Kindermusik Educator will introduce basic musical concepts and then give you the instruments, and the structured free time to put those concepts into play.
Your children will listen to instruments and to each other, learn from their peers and older children, and enjoy music and movement with hoops, scarves and tumble-around play. Story time and family jams, puppet play and happy singing—all the Family Time activities encourage discovery and exploration and foster sharing and social skills too. In this special place for musical, social and emotional learning, your children will strengthen their ties with each other and with you—and they'll start developing the skills they'll need in school and on the neighborhood playground.

6 months to 3 years
New! Kindermusik Sign & Sing 11 am
Sign language curriculum for parents with hearing children
A different approach from other sign language programs. Through songs, toys, and loving playtime between you and your child, Kindermusik Sign & Sing shows you more than 50 signs your child can use to communicate with you. Using research-proven methods shown to speed language development in hearing children, you'll see how sign language can ease frustration and enhance long-term learning abilities for your child.

Songs and finger plays. Already accustomed to finger plays and rhyme-songs—such as "This Little Piggy"—you'll easily substitute American Sign Language (ASL) signs in familiar songs, improving your child's language skills, fine motor skills, and strengthen fingers for zipping zippers and using scissors.

Learn when you play. You'll never have to memorize a list of signs. This curriculum gives you the ASL signs that are most useful to you, and most interesting to your child. So playtime and everyday items around the house—ball, bubbles, mom and dad—become the objects of learning in the classroom, and sign language becomes a natural, happy part of your child's day.

Hearing children who know signs, learn language almost twice as fast. As early as 11-14 months old, hearing children exposed to sign language put little sentences together faster than non-signing children, who do not begin to combine words into short sentences, such as "Da-da car" until the average age of 20 months.Study conducted by Dr. Michelle Anthony and Dr. Reyna Lindert, Signing Smart program founders.

Kindermusik Our Time ages up to 3 years old Mondays at 10 am and Thursdays at 5:30 Can you sound like an elephant? Or hop like a bunny? Our Time encourages your child to uncover an engaging musical world while building confidence, self-control and communications skills. Singing, imitating sounds, rhyming and object identification foster language skills. Creative movement to various musical "moods" develops a sense of balance, timing and spatial awareness. Listening and turn-taking encourage blossoming social skills.
Kindermusik Our Time is designed for children 1½ years to 3 years of age. Along with an accompanying parent or caregiver, children meet weekly for a 45-minute class and enjoy singing, moving, listening and interacting socially, and playing simple instruments. Exploration Time encourages a child's discovery of specially designed instruments, textures, sounds and movements; language skills are fostered with singing, sound imitation, and vocal play; Music & Movement Story Time encourages emergent literacy skills; and creative dancing affirms a child's urge to move.

Kindermusik Imagine That! 1:303 1/2 years to 5 years (before Kindergarten)
Imagine That! takes you and your child on a musical journey of discovery and exploration…a journey limited only by the power of imagination. Pretend play activities are integrated with music, vocal development, storytelling, movement and literature to capture your child's potential to learn and to encourage cognitive and literacy skills, creativity and individuality.
Kindermusik Imagine That! is designed for active, energetic, enthusiastic, and imaginative 3- and 4-year-olds and encourages socialization, sharing, and participating in group activities. Singing becomes a focus for enhancing the preschooler's vocal development as her expressive language is just beginning to emerge. Parents are invited to participate in the last 15 minutes for Sharing Time of the 45-minute class.

Kindermusik ABC Music & Me (4 1/2 to 6) 4 1/2 years to 6 years 4:00

Kindermusik for the Young Child 4:00 pmKindergarten to 7 years
Listen as your child astonishes you with her newfound ability to create musical compositions. Kindermusik for the Young Child provides a pressure-free, developmentally appropriate transition to musically succeed before taking on more formal instruction. Kindermusik provides the opportunity to explore voice development, rhythm, notation, musical symbols and authentic pre-keyboard, string and woodwind instruments.

Young Child helps every child develop a confident, joyful voice for singing and speaking as well as essential building blocks for a future of learning. Designed for children ages 4½ through 7 years, classes meet once a week for 60-75 minutes. Students explore many facets of the musical experience-speaking, singing, moving, dancing, listening, creating and playing instruments, as well as learning about reading and writing music. As the capstone to the child's Kindermusik journey, Young Child broadens and deepens the child's introduction to the fulfillment and excitement of musicianship.

Piano Adventures for the Young Child 6 years to 7 years 4:00 pm
This is a breakthrough way to play the piano or keyboard while preparing your child to read music! We will learn our finger numbers and where to put them on the keys, allowing children to almost immediately play familiar songs. Being able to play a song right away encourages kid's to keep trying when new songs or concepts get harder! Children will progress into learning the staff, that each key has a "letter", how to find that "letter" on the piano/keyboard. Each Music Alphabet key is represented by an animal. The child plays from large letters, later smaller letters with notes. Piano worksheets are included. She?ll learn melodic notation and identify pitches such as the C, A, and D notes on the treble clef, plus rhythmic notation. Eventually she?ll even compose her own music.
Some songs we will learn are: "Twinkle, Twinkle," "Mary's Lamb," "Itsy Bitsy Spider," "Yankee Doodle," "Old MacDonald," "Mulberry Bush," "Muffin Man," "This Old Man," "If You're Happy," "America" "For He's A Jolly Good Fellow," "The Animal Fair," "Polly Wolly Doodle," "Chimes," "Hickory Dickory Dock," "BINGO," "London Bridge," "I'm a Little Teapot," "Hey Diddle Diddle," "Baa Baa Black Sheep," "Farmer in the Dell," "Hush Little Baby," "Three Blind Mice," "Pop! Goes the Weasel"

DID YOU KNOW? Some good tips here!

Thanks April ;)

Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't have to pick the little 'stringy things' off of it. That's how the primates do it.

Take your bananas apart when you get home from thestore. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!

Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and
better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on thebottom are firmer and better for cooking.

Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. Itwill help pull the grease away from the meat whilecooking.

To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add acouple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, orheavy cream in and then beat them up.

For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed.Melt Andes mints in double broiler and p our overwarm brownies. Let set for a wonderful mintyfrosting.

Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want alight taste of garlic and at the end of the recipeif your want a stronger taste of garlic.

Leftover snickers bars from Halloween make adelicious dessert. Simple chop them up with the foodchopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Placethem in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candybars over the apples. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!!Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream.

Reheat Pizza: Heat up leftover pizza in anonstick skillet on top of the stove, set heat tomed-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crustcrispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on thecooking channel and it really works

Easy Deviled Eggs<>Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of in gredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of thebaggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bagaway when done easy clean up.

Expanding Frosting: When you buy a container ofcake frosting from the store, whip it with yourmixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost morecake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eatless sugar and calories per serving.

Reheating refrigerated bread: To warm biscuits,
pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, placethem in a microwave with a cup of water. Theincreased moisture will keep the food moist and helpit reheat faster.

Newspaper weeds away Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers put layers around the plants overlappingas you go cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get throughsome gardening plastic they will not get through wetnewspapers.

Broken Glass: Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip topick up the small shards of glass you can't see
easily.

No More Mosquitoes: Place a dryer sheet in yourpocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.

Squirrel Away: To keep squirrels from eating yourplants sprinkle your plants with cayenne pepper. Thecayenne pepper doesn't hurt the plant and thesquirrels won'tcome near it.

Flexible vacuum: To get something out of a heatregister or under the fridge add an empty papertowel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent orflattened to get in narrow openings.

Reducing Static Cling: Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks thatcling when wearingpanty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and -- TADA! -- static is gone.

Measuring Cups: Before you pour stickysubstances into a measuring cup, fill with hotwater. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup.Next, add your ingredient, suchas peanut butter, and watch how easily it comesright out.

Foggy Windshield? Hate foggy windshields? Buy achalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box ofyour car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth!

Reopening envelope: If you seal an envelope andthen realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer foran hour or two.Voila! It unseals easily.

Conditioner: Use your hair conditioner to shaveyour legs. It's a lot cheaper than shaving cream andleaves your legs really smooth. It's also a greatway touse up the conditioner you bought but didn't likewhen you tried it in your hair...

Goodbye Fruit Flies: To get rid of pesky fruitflies, take a small glass fill it 1/2' with Apple Cider Vinegar and2 drops of dish washing liquid, mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

Get Rid of Ants: Put small piles of cornmealwhere you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home,'can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a weekor so, especially if itrains, but it works & you don't have the worry aboutpets or small children being harmed!

INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS: The heating unit wentout on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted toshow us something and he went over to the dryer and pull ed out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load of clothes.) He took the filter over to the sink, ranhot water over it. The lint filter is made of a meshmaterial - I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like. Well,...the hot water just sat ontop of the mesh! It didn't go through itat all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a filmover that mesh that's what burns out the heatingunit. You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It'swhat is in the dryer sheets to ma ke your clothessoft and static free -- that nice fragrance too, youknow how they can feel waxy when you take them outof the box, well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units tocatch fire & potentially burn your house down withit! He said the best way to keep your dryer workingfor a very long time (& to keep your electric billlower) is to take that filter out & wash it with hotsoapy water & an old toothbrush (or other brush) atleast every six months. He said that makes the lifeof the dryerat least twice as long! How about that!?! Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I'd share!

Note: I went to my dryer & tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran through a littlebit but mostly collected all the water in the meshscreen. I washed it with warm soapy water & a nylonbrush & I had it done in 30 second s. Then when I rinsed it the water ran right thru the screen! There wasn't any puddling at all! That repairman knew what he was talking about! (I checked this on snopes.com and it is true)

PLEASE PASS THIS ON, NOT ONLY COULD IT SAVE SOMEONE'S HOME, BUT IT COULD SAVE SOMEONE'S LIFE.

Summer Safety Tips for your Animals

That Sizzling Sun Did you know that dogs, especially short haired or those with little hair, get sunburned? If you walk your dog this summer, try to do so in the early morning or late at night, taking care to put sunscreen on her sensitive areas (tips of ears, and nose). The pavement gets very hot during the day and can burn the pads on their paws. You can purchase doggie paw booties to keep paws cool. And always take a bottle of water with you on your walks for squirting sips in your dog’s mouth. This should go without saying, but it does bear repeating: never leave your pet in the car, even if it’s parked in the shade. Temperatures inside cars can rise to 150 degrees in a few minutes, causing brain damage and even death in a matter of minutes. Under Arizona State Law, intentionally leaving an animal unattended and confined in a motor vehicle is considered animal cruelty. Don’t put your dog in the back of a pickup, as the surfaces are mainly all metal and absorb the summer sun. Heat exhaustion is common in dogs. Early signs include rapid breathing, heavy panting and salivation. Other signs are bright-red gums and eyes, fatigue, muscle tremors and staggering. If you see a dog experiencing heat exhaustion, take him to a cool, shady place, and apply wet towels or cloths to keep the dog’s body cooled down. Do not submerge in water. Try to give the dog small amounts of water and call a vet immediately. Symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke in cats include excessive panting and drooling; a glazed distressed look; wobbliness; a swollen tongue and possibly diarrhea. Cool the cat down by running water over the cat with a hose or place the cat in a tub, being careful not to submerge the head and call a vet immediately. Do not try to force the cat to drink. Certain breeds, such as boxers, bulldogs, pugs, Boston Terriers, Lhasa apsos and shih tzus have poor panting mechanisms and are more susceptible to heat. These dogs should be kept indoors in air conditioning whenever possible. Dogs with heavy fur should be trimmed but not completely shaved down for the summer as they have a hard time keeping insulated and are more prone to sunburn. Puppies up to six months; overweight and older dogs are also at risk for heat-related illnesses. Arizona law requires that chained animals have access to shade and water. If you must keep your pets outdoors, provide them with a continuous supply of cool water, and keep the water bowl in the shade. Tie a bed sheet or place a tarp over the top of a dog pen, dog house or rabbit hutch to provide as much shade as possible. Sadly, the past two weeks of temperatures of 110 degrees or higher have claimed at least a half dozen dogs’ lives in Maricopa County. All of these deaths were preventable, according to the Arizona Humane Society. Animal cruelty is a serious issue and people who cause an animal to suffer pain or discomfort can be charged with a crime. If you witness or suspect an act of cruelty in your community, such as animals chained with no water or shade, animals left in vehicles, abandoned animals, poisoned animals or abused animals, contact your local police department immediately.

Those Slithering Snakes Snakebites are a fact of life for dogs and humans in a wide area of North America. Venomous snakes bite about 8,000 people annually in the USA, but according to most estimates, only 12 to 15 of these bites are fatal. Fortunately, if your dog happens to be bitten by a poisonous snake the odds are in favor of a complete recovery. To avoid potential snakebites while out walking, keep your dog on a leash. Don’t allow your dog to explore holes in the ground or dig under logs, flat rocks or planks. Stay on open paths where there is an opportunity for snakes to be visible. Keep nighttime walks to a minimum; rattlers are nocturnal most of the year. If you hear a rattlesnake, keep your dog at your side until you locate the snake; then move away. Off-trail hiking with an unleashed dog may stir up a snake and you may be as likely a victim as your dog. If your dog seems unusually curious about “something” hidden in the grass, back off immediately until you know what it is. If your dog is bitten, try to identify the snake by taking note of its size, color patterns and the presence or absence of a rattle at the end of the tail. Look the dog over carefully for fang marks, noting that there may be more than one bite wound. If bitten on a leg, wrap a constricting band on the affected limb snugly at a level just above the bite wound (on the body side of the wound). This band could be fashioned of a shirtsleeve or other fabric and should be snug but not excessively tight. The compression around the limb will slow the spread of the venom. The dog may lose the limb but that is better than losing his life. Finally, get to the nearest animal hospital while trying to keep the dog as quiet as possible. Venomous snakebites cause severe pain, cell death, numbness, diminished function and, occasionally, loss of a limb. Snake venoms inflict local effects such as inflammation, damage to blood vessel lining, clotting defects and localized tissue destruction. Some venom can also cause neurotoxicity and interfere with nerve transmission resulting in paralysis. To combat a snakebite, antivenin can be used. Antivenin is a serum that is commercially produced to neutralize the effects of the injected venom Since it is pricey, costing upwards of $1500, it pays to be proactive when it comes to snakes. Pets can now be inoculated against the bite of a diamondback rattler. Depending on the weight of the pet, up to three shots may be needed, to be followed by an annual booster shot. The drug has been approved by the USDA and the FDA, with minor side effects.
That Scorching Smoke Fire season is here and everyone – including companion animals – must be prepared for disaster. If you live in a potential “hot spot”, the Arizona Humane Society is urging you to take your pets with you if you must evacuate. As the designated responder for companion animals during state-declared emergencies, the Arizona Humane Society will establish temporary shelters for pets that are displaced.Set aside a leash for your dog and a well-ventilated carrier for your cat or other small animals. Keep these items in one place so you always know where to find them – especially in a hurry! You’ll also want to prepare a small, easy-to-carry “emergency kit” (backpack or tote bag) for your pet pre-packed with your pet’s medication; a small bag of his food; a bottle of water; an extra leash; a towel or blanket for bedding; paper towels/plastic baggies for quick clean-ups; a favorite toy; a brush; and other necessary pet supplies. Pack enough for at least three days.
What You Can Do to Keep Pets Safe • Familiarize yourself with your state laws on animal cruelty• Report any abuse or cruelty you witness to your local police department• Memorize your vet’s phone number, input it in your cell phone address book, and add to your landline’s speed dial directory• Micro-chip your pets to help identify lost pets and locate owners more efficiently; make sure information is kept current with micro-chip registry• Keep well-fitted collars and ID tags with current information, including back-up phone number such as cell phone, on your pet• Provide your dog with a safe place during storms – not outside. Your dog may want to rest in a crate in a quiet room.• Get your pet inoculated against diamondback bites, with the initial vaccination occurring before Spring• Learn CPR for petsUsing common sense, and taking some of these tips into account, you can to keep a happy, healthy pet safe in our desert climate.

Young Child Kindermusik classes

Using a small-group approach to music education, Kindermusik for the Young Child provides a pressure-free class where your child can develop a strong musical foundation by learning the concepts, language, notation, and vocabulary of music and its greatest composers.
The program is designed to prepare the young child who is eager for first experiences with musical symbols and instrument discovery but is not yet ready for formal lessons and traditional music reading with an instrument. Parents or caregivers are encouraged to attend the last 10-15 minutes of class.

What you’ll experience in class:
Singing and vocal development. . It may sound like a foreign language when your child sings “ta” and “ti-ti,” but he’s using the language of professional musicians and composers and getting ready to read and write simple rhythm patterns.

Movement. You’ll see your child dance expressively to music, giving him the practice he needs to coordinate his body movements to the sound of music. This kind of musical play not only improves musicianship, but his physical coordination as well. Reading and writing. He’ll learn melodic notation and identify pitches such as the C, A, and D notes on the treble clef, plus rhythmic notation. Eventually he’ll even compose his own music.

Focused listening. Your child will learn to identify a range of orchestra instruments and their sound qualities, while also gaining an early awareness and knowledge of composers and masterworks in Western arts tradition.

Exploring and playing musical instruments. . Authentic percussion, string, pre-keyboard, and woodwind instruments expose your child to the many choices for future musical study, and at the same time provide your child with the opportunity to musically succeed before taking on more formal instruction.

Getting ready for preschool is child's play!

In a Kindermusik class, miming and singing “Wheels on the Bus” may seem like child’s play, but it's actually helping a child develop better coordination and language skills.
In a Kindermusik class, parents and their children—ages newborn to 7 years old—sing, dance and make music together to develop better learning skills for the child. Parents also learn more about the developmental process and benefits by activities in class.
Studies continue to show that music has a positive impact on a child’s ability to learn. Not only in terms of preschool readiness, but making and responding to music can help a child use scissors, kick a ball, as well as have a positive impact on a child’s sense of self-esteem and self-expression.
“For a child, being ready for preschool is about feeling comfortable with yourself,” says Carol Penney, Kindermusik International's Director of Education . “Then they have the confidence to leave mom and dad at home and get involved with what's going on in preschool.”
Kindermusik classes are designed by music and early childhood educators. Activities are based on new and proven research that music making music can stimulate every area in the child’s development:
Stimulate a love of diverse styles of music—varied musical exposure leads to language proficiency and spatial-temporal reasoning, which is the foundation for engineering and science.
Foster creativity using music, dance, drama—children use creative thinking skills in pretend play, enhancing their ability to think in different ways.
Teaches parents about child development—parents are the child's first teacher. Kindermusik classes help parents understand the child development process by explaining developmental benefits of each class activity and offering activities they can do together at home.

The wisdom of Pre-K

Its a sound investment!

"State leaders who have invested in high-quality pre-k for 3- and 4-year-olds understand that it will yield significant returns for their state. States that choose not to invest may find that their children and their economies are not prepared to compete."

The music, literacy, and language connection
Literally speaking--it's music. Repetition, rhyme, and exposure to a variety of sounds are defining qualities of both music and early language learning. Research also shows correlations between music ability and reading comprehension test scores. This blog is dedicated to helping advocates, teachers, school administrators, and parents explain the importance of having music programs, like ABC Music & Me, in their schools.

Think of ABC Music & Me as a multi-media language and pre-literacy immersion program. In class, we use a variety of materials to engage a child's learning abilities. Children use instruments to help tell the stories, they listen to audio stories, they contribute ideas, and they retell the stories through pretend-play.
These activities, plus a practical print component in the take home materials works like the bed-time story and reinforces the same literature based activities in class. Each of these components work together to literally engage every available learning ability in a child's developing mind.
Makes me wish I was in preschool again.
